benazir bhutto murdered
benazir bhutto returned to pakistan in october and was campaigning for the upcoming election yesterday in rawalpindi, when a young man jumped on the back of her car and shot her in the neck and chest, before blowing himself up.
with bhutto dead, her "people's party" is assumed to be in a shambles, and the smarties on tv think the 8 january elections will have to be postponed.
of course no one took responsiblity for the murder. but i was struck by how swiftly all the media channels and international leaders have concluded that this killing was a deed by "islamic extremists". maybe it was. but now, just hours later, it no longer matters if it wasn't. whoever did it, the killing can do nothing but solidify western support for musharaf.
