returning to amsterdam
yestem śpiący. i'm sleepy.
14.05 some truck stop about 3/4 of the way from sanok to kraków. for a mere 16 złoty, taxi driver marek ate some goulash and we both had a bad coffee. then i had a cig outside while waiting for him. it's warm and sunny.
14.45 close to oświęcim now (maybe as close as i'll ever get?), and nearing kraków's airport which is called balice. traffic thick with road work. turns out the exit for the airport is actually blocked off by construction, so marek pulls a daredevil youey and we take the exit on the other side of the motorway.
a song we've heard twice on the radio, on different stations as we crossed the country: "i give a bit of mmh to you, you give a bit of mmh to me" something like that. i'm wondering what the hell is this freaky shit. [turns out it is a 1978 disco song "enigma" by amanda lear, of whom i swear i have *never* heard, but who was a european disco / gay icon. some thought she was a man cuz of her deep baritone voice. wikipedia sez she was a fetishist model singer writer, actress etc, at one point lover and muse of salvador dali.]
for some reason my driver marek was convinced that i am going to london, and it was difficult for me to convince him that i'm really going to amsterdam. maybe he didn't know what i meant by the word "amsterdam". he didn't know the english word "city". even though he lived in london for five years working as a carpenter. well anyway, a little english helps me more than none!
15.40 balice airport kraków. got here at about 15.15 so yes it does take about four hours on the road from sanok. my taxi ride was worth 510 złoty by the meter. this airport is a small gray thing. they have people here in light blue sweatshirts with the words "NEED SOME HELP?" on them.
16.50 fortunately checking in and going through security no big deal, no long lines.
17.35 we go downstairs to a bus that drives us out to the jet, climb the stairs into the plane.
17.50 seated in 9a. the people reading the english announcements on this plane have a very deep accent and odd rhythm to their english. they don't spend much time on the vowels, just as in polish. many of their words are therefore hard to snap. i guess with my naturally long vowels, i must sound just as weird to them when i try to speak polish.
20.00 touchdown schiphol.
