metjes
on saturday pani and i went to the noordermarkt again, got some of those veggie pate sandwiches and some misc groceries. wandered into center, didn't like the crowds, escaped into nes. found a cute bar / club called metjes, vrouwenvriendelijk joint with a nice lady and two very cute cats, orange ones that wanted to climb on us. then we went to have some frites and then stopped in and had a couple beers at dampkring (atmosphere) off kalverstr near spui. for her research she interviewed the guy at the weed bar within. after that i went to hg who was having one of his rare visits by irene.
i think hg is mad at me cuz i don't really wanna make a habit of working too cheap. he seems to think i'm supposed to go the same route he's chosen to go. we've been trying to communicate about it. in a way i want to let it slide, i'd rather just be his friend.
but i do have to start making something happen, my prepaid rent holiday is ending at the end of june.
on sunday pani was gone the whole day so i scanned photos into the computer, very time consuming cuz there were so many.[...]
today (monday) i went to the post office and figured out how to deposit money to pay into other people's accounts -- specifically the lawyer and the bookkeeper. a lady helped me, she couldn't speak english very well (or so she said) but we managed to communicate more or less in dutch. it ended up costing me almost eur 750 all told. money is needed!
then i bought a eur 1.50 magazine called Z from homeless guy which has an interesting bit about what all the "deksels" are in the street. this kind is a cover for checking the sewer. this one is where you can make storm drains overflow into the canals. etc.
pani has written an article about the coffeeshop scene for the polish magazine in new york, and has also finished her preliminary sketch for research proposal to van driem at leiden. she's actually going to leiden tomorrow to listen in on some seminars including wierzbicka this lady from poland who is investigating "semantic primes." she has just finished working on the stuff and now we suddenly appear to be without internet service, so it can't be emailed! bummer. i wonder if this is somehow connected to the cable TV service cutting out. probably not but you gotta wonder. i don't remember any "you're overdue, hurry up and pay" notices from chello or UPC. but maybe they just went to lgf directly.
i've been to "het hok" a couple times with pani, mostly after having pizza in lange leidsedwarstraat. i like the joint. pete and jon first took me there.
finished reading "in the wake of the plague" which was lying around here. started reading karl popper's book "unended quest" from pani ...
for some reason i've been thinking again about this recurring theme, ideas for wearable graphics. shirts, hats, bags or whatever. heck. curtains. even just printed fabric with ideational content.
i dunno what to do about that; what can i do with that idea? find somebody who wants to make a few shirts and try to peddle them? anyway i've been having the ideas about shirts. could you sell them over internet?
i have made a little video to be incorporated into a farewell video for jab, who is leaving natbos. pani did the shooting for me, out around the neighborhood. it ends up with a kinda funny reference to a the windmill. one of those nights we went for a walk around 10 pm, ended up coming back down an older street, i think it was zuiderakerweg, which was just an ordinary looking suburban residential street, not cubist at all. that leads to the zwarte pad, so called, which is our dike-walk to the windmill. so we came back that way.
i was thinking recently about trying to finish that story "miscellaneous providence" now that i've actually spent some days in paris. the thing i was lacking, i thought, was any way to describe the place, cuz i indicated that my two main characters were paris-bound, last time i was working on it. now i think the problem is more like why are they going there. i need to review the thing.
other stories that are kinda in suspension, but might be resurrected. the guy in 13. things that fall from the sky. and of course i need to revisit awl.
now 430 am, happily the internet connection seems to be up again.
