silence of image
i got the feeling last night that images want to be silent. i am always violating the essential silence of an image with words or sounds. but i have to be very careful how i do that. with the wrong words or sounds i can make an image seem trivial. but if i do it right -- if i find the correct angle by which to pierce and transect the image with non-image -- then sometimes i can make the combination of word and image more powerful than either would be alone. or at least so i hope.
the idea came up from something that aj said yesterday, which got me thinking. the trouble is that while i know it's true, i'm still not sure exactly what i mean by that!
also last night i had a meeting about the new stairs film, with pani and micheline and daan de boer. we think we figured out which cameraman to hire and which location we wish we could shoot at. then i spent the rest of the evening at mulligan's. a friend of bazek's came by shortly before midnight, he's in town for something to do with gardens.
today i got paid from one of my recent gigs. so i'm probably going on the thalys to see jab tomorrow, he's visiting paris for a couple days.
